GAIA-X Ziele (I): Digitale Souveränität für europäische Cloud-Nutzer

[ENGLISH VERSION]

Hello and welcome to episode 113 of the Cloud Computing Report Podcast. My interview guest today is Francesco Bonfiglio, the new CEO of the GAIA-X umbrella organization GAIA-X AISBL.

To start with, I ask Francesco to introduce himself in two or three sentences.

GAIA-X AISBL: Organisation and Duties

At the end of March 2021, Francesco was appointed as the new CEO of GAIA-X AISBL, the umbrella organization of the GAIA-X initiative. I ask him, to briefly explain the current organizational structure of GAIA-X, as well as the AISBL’s and his roles within this structure.

GAIA-X Goals (I): Digital Souvereignty for European Cloud Users

When GAIA-X was first introduced in 2019 by the German Minister of Economics, Peter Altmaier, he articulated two main goals. Digital sovereignty for European cloud users and counterbalance the offerings of international hyperscalers with the intention of reducing dependency on these providers. We start by talking about the first goal digital sovereignty for European cloud users. I ask Francesco if this goal is still valid and how they intend to achieve it.

GAIA-X Goals (II): Counterweight and Less Dependency on International Hyperscalers

After that, we talk about the second main goal: counterbalance the international hyperscalers. There are rumors of a heated discussion on the role of these companies from the US, but also China, in GAiA-X. I ask Francesco how he would describe their current role.

Hyperscaler Market Dominance: A Threat for GAIA-X?

At this point, I have to follow up right away and ask Francesco if he doesn’t see the danger or risk of the big hyperscalers exploiting their market dominance at GAIA-X as well.

GAIA-X Roadmap

We then talk about the roadmap of GAIA-X. AISBL has been founded, he is on board as the new CEO. So what are the current projects he and his team are working on and what are the next steps and milestones for GAIA-X?

GAIA-X Benefits for European Cloud Service Providers and Cloud Users

There are two main players in the European cloud market. The European cloud service providers and of course the European cloud users. I ask Francesco how he sees the role of both groups in the further development of GAIA-X and what he thinks are the biggest benefits of GAIA-X.

And finally, there’s the obligatory look into the crystal ball. I ask Francesco for a forecast on the future role of GAIA-X for the European, but also the international cloud market.
